The largest and most
unique masonry structures built by the Federal Government in the 1800s were
the massive Coastal Forts, Fortresses and Fortifications. Constructed
of brick and stone until after the Civil War, and later into nearly the mid
1900s of reinforced concrete, these military installations protected our
coast and major harbors. They often provide spectacular views of our
waterways and coastal cities. Luckily as these installations became
obsolete, many were turned into parks allowing us all to share their unique
and often spectacular architecture, access to beautiful coastal settings and
our historical heritage. |
